Tale

When visionary architect László Toth and his wife Erzsébet flee post-war Europe in 1947 to rebuild their legacy and witness the birth of modern America, their lives are forever changed by a mysterious and wealthy client. Laszlo Toth was also the man’s name. Who mutilated Michelangelo’s The Pieta with a hammer?

His life’s various horrors become a perpetual journey of navigating: existential, professional, familial, intimate – never taking his eyes off the prize of great achievement, and never assessing the value of that prize to begin with

The characters are not who you expect – not the kind that Scooby Doo ends up with, but in more subtle, incremental ways in which real people reveal themselves – they unfold over time, in new contexts, or as circumstances force them. Post-WWII horror. Adrien Brody’s László, a Jewish architect who has escaped the clutches of bloody Europe, comes to the welcoming arms of America – or rather, confronts them – in a frenetic opening sequence that literally gives birth to the Statue of Liberty.

What’s the lesson?

The shameful discovery that his success was born not of his trauma, but because of it? Do we owe it to abuse? To the culture, the country, the power, and those who wield it in the construction of our barbaric legacies (and homelands)?

But there’s no novel

Does burning gasoline on the way to a certain place make our lives more meaningful? The film is charming, chilling, and not boring (did you hear it’s long?). It feels like it’s based on an old novel – a mysterious tome that I’d love to mine for some of the details the film refuses to share.
