The Jackal is an elusive assassin who makes his living by killing for the highest fee. He soon meets a worthy rival in the form of a tenacious British intelligence officer who tracks him down on an exciting cat-and-mouse chase across Europe. Set in 1963, The Day of the Jackal is about the assassination of then-President of France Charles de Gaulle.

TLDR: Redmayne does it

The show brings the action to the present day. Quoted in Graham Norton’s Gosti: Denzel Washington/Paul Mescal/Saoirse Ronan/Eddie Redmayne/Blossoms (2024). Lynch was poorly cast.

Overall, the story is a viable adaptation

Unfortunately, the characters are not equal, which spoils the spectacular and high-quality production. There is no shade for Lynch, it is simply the high bar Redmayne has set. A more experienced actor could have created a more believable counterpart/opponent needed to challenge the Jackal.

The barometer of deception is always on in the background

The character development works to some extent, although some issues in the main characters’ narratives are left open, but that may be intentional. The locations, the various interactions and language distribution, and the change in Redmayne’s character really add a special layer to the story. I can’t wait to see how Season 1 ends and how the quality is maintained or improved in Season 2.

If that happens, Season 2 could be quite promising

I hope Lynch relaxes and gives a more polished performance in an attempt to meet Redmayne.
